Stephen Blades

Stephen Blades is the founder of Elephants in Main Street International. His work centres on helping leaders, teams and organisations turn strategic intent into the conversations, decisions and everyday practices that make change real.

A practice rooted in real transition

Stephen began his formal coaching work in South Africa’s power-station environment, supporting people working across difficult cultural and organisational interfaces. He later worked with the Wits-Vaal Peace Secretariat on initiatives intended to reduce politically related violence and support a peaceful democratic transition. Those early experiences continue to inform a practical approach to trust, dialogue, safety and the conditions that help people move together.

Building Elephants in Main Street

Stephen founded Elephants in Main Street in 1993. The organisation has since delivered leadership, team, culture, coaching and experiential-learning work across more than 50 countries. The work is designed for complex moments: strategic shifts, leadership transitions, project alignment, cross-cultural collaboration and the practical transfer of learning back into work.

How Stephen works

Stephen’s approach brings careful listening and diagnosis together with high-involvement experiences, coaching and structured follow-through. He is interested in the human story underneath a business challenge: what people are seeing, what they are avoiding, where responsibility is unclear and what needs to change for a new way of working to become possible.

Professional learning

Stephen’s professional education includes a Bachelor of Commerce, Honours in Business Management, an MPhil in Management Coaching, an MBA and an MSc in Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence. Further study listed in his professional profile includes Design Thinking through MIT, Sustainable Business Strategies through Harvard Business School, Sustainability Management through Cambridge University and Six Sigma through Oxford University.

Community contribution

Stephen founded the Big Ears Trust, a community initiative focused on helping and advancing hearing-impaired children.

Guiding belief

A guiding belief in Stephen’s professional profile is that people are good and have infinite potential. In practice, this means designing change work that helps people feel safe enough to learn, contribute and create new goals together.

Historic professional evidence

Historic endorsement material in Stephen’s 2024 CV describes his ability to work in complex environments, synthesise content rapidly and translate it into meaningful solutions. This is historical CV-sourced evidence, not a current client endorsement or a promise of outcomes.
